West of Ireland Linux Days!

Hey all,

I was talking to JohnMc last night and we talked a fair bit about the
whole proposed conference thing. We devised a bit of a plan for it...

We decided to go with a weekend time-frame... ie. Friday night, Saturday
and Sunday morning/afternoon... anyone who was at InterSocs 98 will
notice that the layouts are pretty similar but we hope to be quite a bit
more organised...

Anyway, it's looking something like this:

Friday:
18:00 Meet for something to eat
After: Head to bar for drink

The above is flexible obviously... maybe people will want to go straight
to the bar :) We'll investigate various bar possibilities anyway... the
college bar (NUIG) should be available to us if we want it, as this
whole wossname will be in association with NUIG Compsoc.

Saturday:
11:00 Kick-off by saying hello, etc and having our first 1/2 hour talk
... Two more talks will follow with time for questions in each. Three
1/2 hour talks in 2 hours, taking us to 13:00.
13:00 Break for lunch... we'll try to have a few locations
not-too-far-away notified that a giant bunch of nerds will be invading
their establishments.
14:30: Back for the keynote speach which will be given 45mins + 45mins
for a panel in a Q&A session.

Hopefully this won't run too late - at LAID the Q&A ran almost an hour
late IIRC...

15:00(ish) Installfest-type-thing-for-techs - need to have some pretty
ninja stuff at this to keep people interested. Various displays and
things for people to play with. Maybe a few machines running some
network games or something to demonstrate to any sceptics that Linux can
do shit like that, star office, gnome, etc... + the regular stuff. Might
ask some companies working on Linux stuff to come along and show off
their gear. This would also be a good time to give out any free
T-shirts/cd's/etc we might have. Need to talk to people about
sponsorship in this regard - any of you in Linux-friendly co's with
money to spare for a good cause? :)

17:30/18:00 Departure for dinner of some description
20:00 The Great Nerd TableQuiz version 0.2 - now featuring *real nerd
questions* :)
23:00 Off to some club?

Sunday:
13:00 Meeting of whoever's left in some quietish pub/cafe to talk about
the weekend and general Linuxish stuff.

Okay, as ye can see, this is all sketchy as yet. *Please* suggest
whatever springs into your heads. If anyone want's to take charge of a
particular area or help out in some respect please do - there's gonna be
a fair bit to do to organise the full weekend - waaay too mcuh for
one/two people.

The whole layout above is a proposal, feel free to abuse, rip apart,
suggest anew, etc.

Time: Last Weekend in September?
Venue: NUI, Galway

Immediate things: find a keynote speaker, find topics people want to
hear talks on and get people to speak on them (internet security has
been proposed - any speaker volunteers?)

Sorry about the rushed mail, later,
Ross.
