I frequently get "Permission denied; Line in use" when trying to manipulate
the serial ports /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1 using cu, even as root. I just
don't seem to get on with the regular permissions. Try chmod 777 temporarily
and see if the problem goes away - then work your way back to something
more suitable for your system.
Incidentally, I have an expect script which will spawn cu and dial
the eirmessage pager service. Rather kludgy + room for improvement,
but let me know if you'd like to see it.
