a lot of people will have seen this before, but for those who havn't,
David Ritchie's (co-creator of Unix) website has a lot of really
interesting stuff on it:
http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr
eg, from some notes from 1971:
"At the start I stated that UNIX was a general-purpose time-sharing
system. I imagine the concept is familiar, but I want to bring out a
few points."
which is interesting considering the recent thread on linux-kernel where
several people were making noise that they needed linux to be more
'real-time' to make it more suitable to run things like sound app's. (ever
had an mp3 skip cause something else reads your IDE disk?).
lots and lots of other interesting stuff there.
