still working on installing the new redhat 7.0 (the rawhide release).
it fails to install over an nfs mounted cdrom because it actually fits
on two cdroms. eek. solution: copy the contents of RedHat/RPMS on cd
2 to the same dir of the nfs server's copy of cd 1. urg. you can't
install off the cdrom or it's iso image anymore.

anyway it comes with mysql, kde2, xfree86 4.0. bash version 2.0 is
also standard. the boot screen is graphical and has a menu of kernels
(and it's still lilo, i thought grub had a patent on that... ahem).
dunno how it works on serial terminals - hope they've considered that.
servers should not have heads; burning long dead dinos for screensavers
in a room people don't enter is, well, stupid.

what else - oh, the init scripts are now in /etc/init.d with /etc/rc?.2
polluting the namespace. for those that care /etc/rc.d still exists
as a link and all of it's rather arbitrary anyway since it's controlled
by /etc/inittab's si entry and the shell script it defines. the bored
could write up a different system, code it in perl or if they like fast
startups code it all in c.

it also comes with amanda for backups and they seem to have started to
include some crypto utils on it like cipe and others. also a host of
low level net utils (router type things). oh, and they have the java
gnu compiler as well as one called chill. apparently chill is used
a lot in europe? anyone used it? it was compared to modula-2 and ada
(shudder).

all in all it's definitely a beta, i hope they take their time releasing
it.

oh, barb wire: as i was picking throgh the near suse number of rpm's i
was watching the "boob tube" - yes, "barb wire" was on this evening.
no one told me it was like a campy/futuristic remake of casablanca!
very bizzare.
