rpm's are VERY useful for managing your installed system:
to check to see what software "packages" are installed
to cleanly install and remove packages
to verify dependencies on [un]installation
to upgrade from distribution X to X+1 ( or X+n )
to see all of the files installed by a package
.... and more I'm sure.

Even if you don'e like rpm's you can still download them and
change the format to be more debian/corel [others?] like by
using "alien".
