Ooh, that's nasty ! But is it correct ? I've never come across a UPS which
cuts power to its customers - why would it do so ? It's an extra piece of
hardware in the UPS for no good reason that I can see (of course, I'm
notoriously short sighted). Most UPS send a signal that the power has gone,
and then, somewhat later, a signal that the battery is about to go. This
second signal should tell the box to shut down. I imagine that what's
happening here is that the NT box is taking too long to shut down after the
signal, and power runs out.

What does the UPS in question do with the serial line - does it send
characters, or does it use some status lines as flags ?
