[ILUG] www + ftp on same server

Hi,
        I have been reading that for obvious reasons its
better to have ftp and www on two differnent servers .
How do i go about this when the www homepage files are
on the www server ? how do i get a ftp server to
access the files on the www server ? OR is it just
easier all round to put both on the same server ?
