is anyone here aware that before ms bought the company that made what is
now "windows mediaplayer" that it ran on linux. and that it currently
runs on solaris?
another damn website i can't view because they stopped access to the
linux player years ago with a note "new version coming soon" and now
there's no mention of it at all.

there's no linux option. here's story from the end of 1/2000 saying
they were considering a unix port:
i tend to use free s/w whenever possible, but most people do actually
*use* computers and would like to see the content they pick. ms is
using file formats to squeeze out competition and its just a lame way
to compete. it's like being six years old and the kid with the ball
keeps making all the rules or he's going to take his ball and go home.
at least when i was six i had the hope that adults weren't like that.
boy was i wrong.
ah well, at least rte and cnn both use real player. that will teach me
to stray from them for news.
