I installed RedHat 6.0 on my home PC about two weeks ago. I had some
problems doing an upgrade so I did a fresh install and was mightily
impressed.
I changed a number of settings over the next few days and then did not
get near the computer for a couple of days. When I started it up the
machine proceeded fine until it went to start Sendmail. At that point it
just completely stopped and I had to do a hard reset, OUCH.
I booted from a Toms Boot disk and did chmod -x on
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail and rebooted. It was late and all I really
wanted to do was check my mail so I fired up Netscape and managed to
collect my mail.
I don't know what I did to break it. I changed my hostname and a couple
of things related to it but I cannot rember what.
As I understood it I needed sendmail to transport my mail but it seems I
don't. How is this? Can I simply remove it or what advantages can I get
from using it?
I started reading the documentation but it was about 3AM and not much
was sinking in. 2:30 now and my brain functions have gone to bg.
What's the story?
