Sorry to reply to my own, but I managed to get this working using the
console under Alt-F2. I created my own /mnt/etc/lilo.conf and then
ran /mnt/sbin/lilo -r /mnt to install (RH mounts the root dir under
/mnt while installing).

As regards the insmod, /bin/insmod /modules/loop.o produced a message
that loop.o was the wrong version for the kernel (4BOOT as opposed to
14BOOT I think).
