Nick

I am no expert compared to others on the group... I only started using
Linux a few weeks ago.

I am a pi***d off Windows user who wants the ease of use of Windoze and
the stability of Linux. My only requirement for my stand alone machine
is Internet connection and office tools. If your requirements are
similar, my experiences may be useful.

I use KDE as it is simple. Kmail is adequate, and Kppp was fairly easy
to set up.Indigo may cause a few problems I do not know about.I did
play around briefly with SuSE 6.0 and 6.1 is considerably different.

Because kppp was easy to set up I have not set up my base network
congiguration... I didn't have to. I have a connection

Remember to remove the lock in the /etc/ppp/options file. I think that
most ISPs use PAP authentication, and set the modem to the correct coms
port. On version 6.0 the modem was set to /dev/modem. In 6.1 it's
different. On my system it's /dev/ttys1. If I can remember correctly I
think I had the same problem as you until I changed this.

Hope this has been of help.

One final thing. If you have registered your copy....check out the mail
groups on the SuSE website.(I think you have to be registered, but I'm
not sure) They are very good ...lots of traffic, and the SuSE people
themselves are involved in them. The support is even better than the
official SuSE support. Certainly would put Microsoft to shame.

Regards
Brian
