Thanks to everyone who replied.

wvdial is great.

however the problem was in fact with the serial ports

i had to go into /etc/rc.d/serial and uncomment one line to get
my ttyS0 working properly. Before that I kept getting input/output errors
from wvdial.

I'm surprised yast doesn't do this properly. Maybe someone on the list
knows what's going on here.
