#hi all,
#
<snip>
#i was just wondering if it was ok to write articles
#for the beginners linux guide. i know articles in
#general have been debated but wasnt sure of the BLG.

content of any relevant type is welcomed for the ILUG's site.
And hey you're a member of the ILUG so you're just as
entitled to submit content as everybody else is.

#Hi all,
#
#I'd also be willing to contribute some articles to the BLG
#(hopefully they would make it)

Content will be accepted and published on the site so long
as it's:
+ written to be easy to understand (after all there's no
sense in making a difficult topic seem more complex)
+ not overburdened with bad grammar or spelling mistakes
(there's no point in myself or anyone else with the
same access rights having to effectively rewrite your
article from scratch to get it up to the same standard
as the articles that are already on the site).

If you've say written content for the BLG but we think it's
a bit too advanced or complex (in other words if we think
it'd make a Beginner faint) then we'll put it in the
tutorials section.
And if what you've written seems to be more theory/explanative
than practical (in a 'hands-on' sense) then we'll put it
in the articles section.
Nothing will be ignored or turned down without good reason.

#I even have a few docs that I wrote before once I can find them
#that _might_ quickly be adapted to go in.

Methinks I like the sound of that!

#Even to non newbies for Linux, many aspects (perhaps dial-in or
#samba or ipchains etc.) are daunting to get into with the current
#documentation (read HOWTO, read MAN, search net and hope you find
#the answers).

I can completely agree with that.

#My suggestion is that the BLG page should add a projected
#scope page which outlines the documentation that is needed
#next or would be desirable so that everyone who could
#contribute can have a look and see if there isn't something
#they can and will do. People should also be able to flag
#that they are working or willing to contribute to sections so
#that a team approach can be taken to pulling it together
#without risk of duplicating effort unneccessarily.

These are all very good ideas...

#I think the first thing I will _try_ to do is to help get that
#restriction about RedHat only out (or at least extend it to my
#favourite Debian). Is this something that would or would NOT
#be appreciated?

Oh I think it would be. Owen Kelly, the guy who wrote the brunt
of the BLG, put in that restriction mostly (I think) because he
didn't have experience with any of the other distributions at
that time.
I don't think it'd be fair for his restrictions to still apply
now that he's no longer interested in writing for the BLG.
No matter what distro you use (or care to promote), anything
written that seems in line with the above criteria will get
published on the site.

#The site needs articles. I have a couple in the pipeline myself that
#I'll be submitting in the next couple of weeks. Plus, I doubt that
#any reasonable articles would be turned down.

Oh come on. Let's be bluntly honest: the site is gagging for new content
be it stuff for the BLG, articles, tutorials or photos for the Tux's Travels
section. B^)

Just remember http://linux.ie/contribute.php is your friend.

#It's a pity more people don't (people like me.. Ahem). I look forward
#to reading them.

As I'm sure everybody else does.

Ken
