RE: [ILUG] Linux for a 386?

Methinks its to be a firewall, I use smoothwall and I also had "similar"
errors, but as Rick says, need mo info.

My issue was the floppy drive was dusty, and the diskettes were dodgy too.
When I generated from a new floppy and cleaned the drive the problem went
away. OK the hdd is a wee bit faulty, but its a firewall so I don't care :)

16 MB is fine for smoothwall so SHOULD a 386. Note, I say smoothwall coz its
well optimised as a router/firewall and a couple of other mickeymouse server
jobs like DNS and DHCP and stuff, with no x-server. I do find it slower on
the p75 (24MB) in comparison to the p200 that I used to use, but I put this
down to the fact that I threw in a de205 ISA NIC, and ISA cards generate way
too many interrupts per second, and its only 10MBit - but since I use Eshite
"lots of limits" - for the last month at least :( and I only have a dial up
it makes little difference.

Rant Rant, anyway...

My machine is a p75 (old Gateway machine) with 16 MB ram, and a 2Gig HDD,
and I currently run Smoothwall 0.96 or something. Apparantly the new version
0.98 does proxy aswell so this will require more firepower.

You didn't specify: How big a hard drive(s)? How much RAM? What role
do you want the machine to do?

Personally, I wouldn't even try: http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/#386
