snip details of modems working in one place and not in another.
>Anybody knowledgable care to comment ?
I am not in the least knowledgable but had a similar experience. Modem
was blown up by lightening, took it to the man who built the computer,
who is based in Dublin, to get a new one. He tested it, I saw it working
at his house. Got it home, rural Co Meath, didn't work Well, it would
connect but then come to a grinding halt. Phone support etc, couldn't
get it going, took it back. Worked fine. Changed it for an identical one
(big mistake with hindsight), that one worked at his house, came home,
same story. Finally used another computer to download updated drivers
and helper program, now it works. Although not with Linux, hence me
asking ages ago about external modems, and I *still* haven't got one.
This would appear to be something to do with the quality/power of the
phone line, although not in the way that you suggest. Sorry if it is
irrelevant in this case.
Whilst I'm here, I asked last time about modems for use in France. If
anyone knows whether an external modem bought here would work there
perhaps they could contact me by email cos it's OT here.
TIA Holly
