And if you don't want to go through the fsck crap, you should be running a
journaling filesystem. More relevant to your existing problem though is
this: if you have sysrq support compiled in do the following when your
machine hangs;
Ctrl - Alt - sysrq - s (sync)
Ctrl - Alt - sysrq - u (unmount filesystems)
Ctrl - Alt - sysrq - b (reboot)
I think that's it anyway... it's been so long since I needed it. Check out
/usr/scr/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt (or something along those lines).
