NIS requests themselves will cross routers perfectly well. however,
clients that broadcast to find a NIS server will not see the NIS
server if it isn't on the same segment.

A lot of (relatively new) clients should allow you to specify the
server explicitly, eg linux, IRIX 6.2 and 6.5, etc..

just configure the clients explicitly with the server name. slightly
more secure too. (as plain NIS can be anyway..)
