There ARE problems with Intel NICs in at least 2.2.16 through 18 with the
stock driver. Kate put me wise to them when he had problems on some Compaq
rack mounted kit (and I think he'd seen it elsewhere too). I then bought a
notebook which happened to have an integrated Intel NIC and had some odd
problems, though different from those Kate encountered. Both of our problems
were resolved by using the driver Intel have made available. It's delivered
as source which builds a module - they're not releasing it in a form which
can go into the kernel "at this time".
