aha...
still, your problem so far appears to be in the BIOS - ie the BIOS
doesn't like your disk. Linux will not use DMA if the BIOS disabled
it, cause there must be a reason the BIOS disabled it...
so perhaps it's your BIOS, or as others have suggested bad cable or
disk.
2.4 will automatically use DMA/UDMA/etc.. if it supports the
controller and it is safe to do so.
