Kewl, I remember compiling several kernels versions to get the bloody thing
to work.
I found that it would ALWAYS load the module, but that didn't mean that you
had sound afterwards. Thats was the reason I choose ALSA. This was with
whatever kernels were available when Mandrake 7.2 was just released.
But hey if its fixed use the kernel! The less shite you load on a machine
the more responsive it will be.

The NeoMagic 256 driver is also in the stock kernel now, so you
don't have to use Alsa. It works fine on my Dell Latitude CPiA
( although the the latest stable?? kernel 2.4.4 broke it, but
it's now fixed again in 2.4.5-preN ).
