I remember having this problem, but it was a while ago. I spent ages
messing with the compression modules thinking they had something to do
with it, but it may have been a red herring. Have you upgraded your
disto's original kernel? I've found that upgrading the kernel tends
to break PPP stuff. I think I just installed a new distro and the problem
went away. For some reason the phrase "stupid mode" springs to mind.
Have you got this turned on or off (in /etc/wvdial.conf)? Otherwise
I'd suggest upgrading wvdial...
