Re: [ILUG] Work for your ILUG!

As PRO and member of the ILUG committee I just want to throw in a few
thoughts on this matter.

Is it time to ask ourselves, "what is the committee here for?"
What have we done that we couldn't have done without the formal naming
of positions? Did I do anything substantial as PRO this last year? Not
that I recall..
We did organise LinuxWorld and a stand at the RDS, but then again, we
also organised LAID and a previous stand at the RDS when there wasn't
such a formal structure.

It's obvious to any long-term list member who the active participants in
ILUG are. Perhaps the formal committee structure is too rigid for
something as informal and fluid as ILUG. There are how many new users on
the list now? I mean those that post on a regular basis.. How would you
like to help the ILUG?

It may simply be the case that the best way of running ILUG is for
people to take responsibility for events/updates as they happen, to
garner support and get the help of volunteers on a case by case basis.
That's the way it's been run before (and to be honest still is, look at
the stand at eXPO and the work Pronnsias put in.)
Unfortunately, as Kate put it, "it's the old timers driving things",
which a lot of the old timers are finding tough in their old
age(joking!) and other commitments (houses, marriage.. real life!)
The problem is that the old timers are known to us all, new users
aren't. It's a lot easier to organise events when you know a person
personally ..

To counter the above, a committee is required for stuff like bank
accounts, contact points, etc. Is it better that it just be a
figure-head org?

Donncha.
PS. Please excuse the hastily formed structure of this mail please!
