Throw that CD-ROM drive in the bin....... or try cleaning it... when the
light comes on for ages it means it's spinning up and down... trying to read
the disk. Which means the lense in the cdrom drive is either Dirty or FUBAR.
Beg Borrow or Steal a new one.
Keith.

Subject: [ILUG] crap cd-rom drive
Hello all,
I have a shite CD-ROM drive. Buying a new one is not an option as i am
poor and Parthus have decided not to employ me despite being impressed by
my cv, but anyway...
When i access a CD usually the LED on the drive door turns on and stays on
for ages and nothing seems to happen, even when just mounting it. This
hangs the whole system up (a linux scheduler bug???) ctrl+alt+del doesn't
work nor ctrl+alt+bksp. I have to resort to the reset button which fecks
up ext2 and the other day i had to reinstall everything, which is not fun
as the installation programs are CD based and this too usually stops
half-way through (I starting compiling KDE2.1 on friday and it's still
going...).
Is there anyway of killing the access to the CD or giving a timeout to the
driver so that it stops trying to read from the CD after the timeout? I
have cleaned the lens. Any help or a new CD drive would be appreciated.
James
