This may be unrelated, but I've used GSM Terminals (aka modems) in the
past, and data calls were unreliable (i.e. lots of line noise) unless I
enabled the MNP (I think) mode where the modem did error correction.
I think the default was a best-effort guaranteed 9600 link with possible
errors. Enabling error correction gave a <9600 link, but 100% reliable.
Remind me later when I'm at the office, and I can look up the AT command
that enabled error correction.
