Strictly speaking this is a bit off topic, so apologies but I _am_ going to
run Linux on it...
I'm looking at a Dell Inspiron 4000 and wondering if it's worth a
price difference of £180 to upgrade from Celeron 700MHz/128kb cache
to PIII 850MHz/256kb...
Is it going to make a noticeable difference, for statistical
number-crunching (Stata runs on Linux, so do TDA, xlispstat...),
compiling TeX file, compiling downloaded C-source, ps2pdf,
Emacs/Gnus etc?
Secondly, will I benefit from a DVD drive under Linux?
Thirdly, what hoops will I have to jump through to get the
"internal modem plus 10/100 NIC" to work, especially as a modem?
Any info gratefully accepted!
Brendan
