I brought it up, and he only had info about the manufacturers
(Sony, Toshiba, NEC) rather than chipsets, but he also said that in
his experience people didn't have problems using it with Linux ("or
they'd have gotten back to me"...).

I've taken this advice, which means I can't afford the DVD or extra
150MHz :-).

FWIW I had a good look at Gateway too, but most of their upgrades
are substantially more expensive, so their final price is far less
competitive than their base price.
