In addition to the cygwin X server,
there's a pure java X server (the X server is the program
that renders the GUI - X clients are the local or remote programs
that want their GUIs displayed)
called WierdX from http://www.jcraft.com/wierdx/
While it's not especially speedy, it has the advantage that
you could even run it as an applet in a web page so
that anyone with java could connect to it...
