It's all my fault, really. Here's my write-up of the evening when it
all happened:
So, last Wednesday, Chris di Bona and I were with Eric Raymond at a
meeting of CVALE in Lathrop (near Stockton), then went out to a late
dinner with him and some other LUG types. Eric was detailing for them
his CML2 kernel-build system (which has been accepted for 2.5 and later
Linux kernels), and how it alters "make config", "make menuconfig", and
"make xconfig" while still providing their original functionality.
I had an idea: "You know, in addition to those, you really need "make
advent", where you try to pick an unavailable option and it says "You
cannot go that way", and so on. He thought for a moment, shook his
head, and said "The crazy thing is... this could work. In fact, it's
not even very difficult." And we all started helping him design it,
right there.
And it works -- for very bizarre values of "work". Get it here:
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/cml2/ You'll need Python 2.0 (e.g., from
Debian-unstable).
