Thanks for all the replies.
First, I wasn't using a crossover cable, naively hoping the
standard was symmetrical. In the absence of a crossover cable I
have set it up to pretend to be the NT machine and talk to my linux
box through the local net.
Second, I do have a wodge of CDs from Dell, but I don't trust my
ability to get it back to the status quo ante. However, if I'm just
resizing the partition with FIPS, I've a good chance of not needing
to re-install? Yes? Is FIPS the tool of choice?
