i have a really really annoying ppp problem... after a certain amount
of time online it goes into a loop of renegotiating IP addresses.
It's always preceded by:
kernel: ll header: 45:00:02:40
and
kernel: martian source <my_ip> from <ip of proxy.clubi.ie> on dev
ppp0
these are repeated several times.
then ppp goes into a spin, and i get:
pppd[3264]: local IP address 212.17.32.129
pppd[3264]: remote IP address 212.17.49.254
over and over and over again in the logs, with the ll
header and martian source messages sprinkled in between. Sometimes i
also get:
kernel: ll header: 45:00:00:34
or 45:00:00:e9, 45:00:00:3b, 45:00:00:3a.. etc..
And no traffic passes. The link is dead for user data.
Now this seems to be triggered by sustained ppp activity, eg
downloading stuff via ftp, scp or sftp. I'm not sure the ll header
stuff is totally relevant, cause i've always gotten those messages,
however a little grep through the logs shows that in the last 56 odd
days:
log for n days ago number of messages
0 71
1 23
2 22
3 37
4 75
24 1
40 2
41 1
52 1
(all other days being 0) and the problem started about 4 days ago -
least i tried downloading loads of stuff from rawhide and that's
when i first noticed.
anyway.. damm annoying, cause i can't download anything big without
this happening.
looking at debug output from pppd (and kernel portion):
Jun 20 02:35:02 hibernia pppd[13263]: rcvd [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <addr 212.17.34.254>]

Jun 20 02:35:04 hibernia pppd[13263]: sent [IPCP ConfAck id=0x3 <addr 212.17.49.254>]
and so it goes over and over again.. from my reading: clubi keep
sending Config Requests, my end acks every time, clubi says.. hmm
don't like VJ compress, we say ok. there seems to be agreement, but
no, clubi keep sending Conf Req's and it keeps going in a similar
vein to the above.
I've tried disabling VJ, and now am close to the end of a long
download that has failed time and time again - but then again, every
time i tried it before i got a bit further than last time. and why
would VJ negotiation cause a problem in the middle of the session,
when it didn't at dial-in time? heck, why is clubi even sending me IP
Config requests??
i tried getting a full pppdump, but that doesn't seem to work - i get
no user traffic at all, even though the dump file seems to get stuff
in it. (i've had this problem before with ppp dumps but can't
remember the solution).
from my reading of it: clubi is broken. (Thomas... what you been up
to in the last week or so?) :)
any ppp wizards out there?
(hmmm.. novj /seems/ to have cured it, downloaded
sendmail-(|doc|cf)-8.11.4.*rpm and now 2MB into downloading
enlightenment, and it's still working.. hmm..)
