"Cost"? Have you seen the Dell PowerEdge 350? It's an "entry-level"
server in that it has IDE instead of SCSI etc, but the price is pretty
amazing.
Getting "cheap" machines is likely to be a false economy in any case,
if you're actually doing anything serious and critical with these
boxes. 24/7 servers really need solid hardware. I can't recommend
the Dell PowerEdge 2450 highly enough - we have about 17 of them in
our server farm; they're great boxes. I'm seriously considering the
PE350 for a couple of jobs which don't require fast disks (firewalls,
etc); it looks like an unbeatable box.
