  At work I wrote a perl cgi script to generate images on the fly.
  Generates literally hundreds of images (graphs with TTF text).
  (saved about 4/5GB disk space)

  See http://www.boutell.com/gd/

  Dunno about PHP...

John P. Looney wrote something:
{ What sort of tool is recommended for making up pngs or jpegs of text ?
{
{ Something like "Make an image from 'hello' that's twenty pixels high, and
{ in a bold courier font". Is it easy ? Can I pass the gimp command line
{ parameters or some such to do this ?
{
{ Is it possible to do it inside PHP/apache ? I've noticed when building
{ PHP that it's got functions like;
{
{ http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.imagettftext.php
{
{ But I'm not 100% sure on using them in a live website - basically,
{ generating images on the fly.
