Someone else suggested scripts too - this is NOT a script issue. The message
> Setting /boot/System.map to the current running kernel [OK]
(this is the correct message BTW, not what I originally had) comes from
init, not from a script. The next message should be
Finding module dependencies but it doesn't get displayed. I still don't know
WTF is going on (I'm up to my elbows in it as I write) - I've been able to
boot from a standby copy of the root filesystem, but I do need to fix the
broken root. It seems that at this point, init makes symlinks in /boot of
System.map -> System.map-2.2.13-7mdk and
module-info -> module-info-2.2.13-7mdk
I'm not sure why this is - it doesn't happen on some other boxes I use (e.g.
Mandrake 5.3, SuSE 7) but it does on others (e.g. RH6.2, and a copy of
Mandrake 6.1 (which is where I'm having the problem - I may have mentioned
5.3 earlier) which I installed under VMware on my noteboot to have a
sandbox). As I mentioned, I'm addled, and any suggestions will be gratefully
received.
