I seem to remember that the only part of the original IBM PC which only IBM
had knowledge of was the BIOS.
Our friends in Compaq then reverse engineered the BIOS, helping to force the
out-pouring of clones all aver the place.
One IBM knew that they had lost their hold, they released a lot more info.

I was under the impression that IBM were responsible for the opening of
their PC standard.
