indeed.
even chumpier would be if you /gave/ to intel all the knowledgable
people who made that fast CPU possible. (intel already had fabbing
rights to Alpha).
even better:
- a v. big IC design and foundry house introduces a new CPU with CPU
features that sound suspiciously like those in your own CPU.
- even more suspiciously, you had previously negotiated with that
foundry to have them fab your cpu, which would have involved specs and
designs being given to them under NDA. the deal fell through.
- so you take it to a state sanctioned arbitrator who decides "yep,
you've got 'em by the balls."
- so what do you do? you sell them the rights to not only your CPU,
but also to all your other successful IC designs (PCI bridges, network
controllers, embedded low-power CPUs, etc.. etc..) in exchange for a
very paltry sum and the right to be the monkeys who tend to and
service their computers.
