eek, yes of course.
i was thinking of when IBM decided they wanted a 'real' operating
system and subcontracted out the development of OS/2 to MS. Had they
chosen someone different we might have had a nice GUIish OS on top of
a unix kernel instead...

as someone else pointed out, unix was already in use on much smaller
machines than the PC, including MMU less arches.
