well in pine you can have folders be 'pruned' every month. (ie they
are renamed to name-year-month.). or you can set it so that read
messages are automatically moved to an archive folder (ie list-read)
and have the archive folder pruned every month. (that's how i do it
home).
but you use mutt... ah well.
