Very, very strange. I'd suspect hardware over software, to be honest.
But, it could be that you picked a wierd, or not-installed font, and this
trapped some dodgy bug in gnome-terminal.
If you have the bandwidth, grab yourself a copy of helix gnome. If you
don't, I'm sure we could knock you up a helix-gnome install CD here.
