Well there is an app called "Where am I?" in gnome that does this
but it can't be run in text mode ... maybe you could go through the source.
Or of course launch Q3 and follow the mouse that way :)

Thanks for your reply, but xev would only give me
mouse coordinates when that window is active and the
mouse is over it. If i set xev to monitor the root
[desktop] window then it would also stop recording
mouse coordinates when another window overlays the
desktop. I need to monitor the mouse coordinates
*everywhere* and this is why i thought of xeyes.
