Ah yes,
Well the drives are 40MB a sec, Wide Ultra SCSI-3, and the controller is
FAST/WIDE - 20MB a sec. Not ideal but functional.

but the parity check is on just the SCSI header - not the data.

SCSI-3 -> what exactly do you mean... Ultra/Fast20, Ultra2/Fast40 or
the newest Ultra160? ("SCSI-3" has suffered a lot of abuse - i've no
idea what exactly it really is.)
/IIRC/ Ultra160 (Fast80) was the first with integrity checking of
data.
