no idea.

hasn't this been said before, you need to setup limits appropriate for
the machine and expected usage:
joe /etc/security/limits.conf
and make sure pam_limits is in the session section of the relevant pam
config files. (eg system-auth on newer pam setups, or
kdm/login/xdm/etc.. on older ones).
that will honestly solve a lot of your problems. (but not the X one
- try -bs there).
