It's unclear why the kernel would even be relevant. You're going to
want to set up XFree86 v. 4.1.0 for ATI Rage 128 support, tell the
config utillity the correct amount of RAM, etc. That should do the
trick.
Whether the pciutils report anything useful is not really relevant.
