Hey I'm a brand new user to Linux
I have loaded the OS up a few times and taught myself a few simple commands
on how to navigate around.
Now here is my question?
I have a laptop that I use for most of my work and the like running Win 2k
Pro, I also like to play Ultima Online using the laptop.
The thing is the PCMCIA card I have is broken using the RJ11 connection to
dial the web, But I can use the RJ45 connection,
So here is what I have done so far
I had an old machine P1 133mhz, 16 MBram, 2 gig Hard Drive, sound card (not
really important), 33.6 modem, 10/100 Ethernet realtec Network card,
keyboard mouse and monitor and so I thought super what I will do is set up
Win 95 get a free proxy server application (proxy+
http://www.proxyplus.cz/ ) get that to dial up the net give both machines an
IP address of 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 and hey I'm away in hack.
No No not the case everything worked fine could browse the web pick up my
mail all OK here but then I had to load up socks cap32
(http://www.socks.nec.com/reference/sockscap.html) for Ultima Online set
that up and started playing the game I stayed on for ten minutes got really
annoyed at the lag time going on (I know that the fact I'm using socks Cap32
instead of a direct link to there servers will make it slow), I knew that
win95 handles Tcp/ip very bad for dial up and was going to mess around with
packet sizes and then thought I know I will load up Linux set that up as the
proxy server or even a gateway to the web it will be great experience I
thought.
And so I did that was on Thursday of last week I have loaded up Red Hat
Linux V 7.0 Dual booting it with windows 95 1 gig each and looked on the web
for ways to set this up
I did not set a GUI up, all command (best way to learn I figured) all
hardware works I can ping my laptop and vice versa I have got the modem to
dial once don't ask me how? (one of those things you do and never remember
what you did) but in reading how to set the network up I have created files
here there and everywhere and I think the best way would be to reinstall
Linux and start again the proper way I do not have any friends that know how
to use Linux but let me tell you if I did they would have killed me by now.
I have read of other Unix OS's that might be better for this project like
FreeBSD ?
Can or has anybody set this kind of thing up if so could they jot down how
to do it from scratch explaining it for a 4 year old would be great,
experience playing Ultima Online using this kind of set-up would also be
great.
Thanks Again Linux World help me break free into the real world and away
from World a Windows.
