arg.. to be cursed with a memory that enjoys deceiving me.

gcc /doesn't/ spit out lots of nops on MIPS, just a very occasional
#nop. rather the asm is heavily sprinkled with directives,
particularly .set volatile and .set novolatile or .set noreorder and
.set .reorder.
