Beware of the Connector Conspiracy.

Much of this equipment seems to have been designed with the USA market
primarily in mind, where the Federal Communications Commission puts
stringent limits on effective radiated power for the 2.4 GHz band.
Accordingly, it's suspected that FCC urgings had some influence on
manufacturers' use of one-off, non-standard antenna connectors (in order
to subtly discourage users from switching to more-effective antennas).
It might be worthwhile paying a visit to your local wireless shop,
before buying 802.11-family gear, to see if they can compensate for this
tendency with appropriate converters.
