Look at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso-8859-15/Compose
(assuming you're in an iso-8859-15 locale, which en_IE at domain euro is; I
think plain en_IE is iso-8859-1)
That lists the compose sequences for various entertaining characters.
Then find out what your compose key is. It's usually one of the
"Windows" keys like menu or right-alt, or something. Twiddle using
xmodmap if necessary.
I have the right Windows key mapped to compose; so windows-'-a gives
me a, etc.
