You get a non-authorative answer because DNS is setup.

When one does a DNS lookup for say charmander.pokemon.ie
The first time it goes at looks for it.

(My box reports, charmander.pokemon.ie : 192.168.0.2)

If you then run the sme command from another box / same box.

Theninstead of looking for the adress, DNS server already knows it, so give
you the non-author.... ans because it has NOT check the existense again. It
already had it in cache.

Check the how-to for DNS. My guess is you have no record for the box in
question on the DNS server.

As for sendmail, I am still working on it, but the problem seems to be the
server is not resolvable.

Fix the DNS server. I think you have a simple issue.
Look at the error below : searching for "tux.housenet.ste.housenet.ste" ....

So, the hostname has the domain name as part of the hostname.
You caould probable get around this tem[porarily by using the /etc/hosts
file, and manually enter the ipaddresses of each box and try again.

Hope this isin't completely usless. - I am fighting my sendmail box at domain home.
Although I have a working one here in work :(

Subject: [ILUG] DNS and sendmail

/* Sorry in advance - this might be more waffle than you's have time for, I
understand if no one has time to help */

This I'm sure has been asked a hundred times, but how do I get sendmail to
work?
I have set up Bind 8 and I think its working except for I don't understand
MX records, and what information they need (even though webmin is making it
easier) I still haven't got it right
This is whats happening so far:
I have three boxes, one windows box with a small mail server running and I
watch the logs to see what goes on (called server.housenet.ste),
Another box with Mandrake 7.1 (my client box) with sendmail and fetchmail
and all the rest (called media.housenet.ste),
And the third with Mandrake 7.1 with bind 8 running and sendmail (which I'm
trying to configure - Called tux.housenet.ste)

When I do a "nslookup tux.housenet.ste" from media.housenet.ste I get the
right answer, but when I do a "nslookup server.housenet.ste" from the same
box I get the right answer but it sats on top 'non-authoritve answer' - so I
recon that could be a problem so I sent a mail to stee at domain tux.housenet.ste and
it bounces, when I read the sendmail queue from within webmail it says
address unresolved or something like that and the mail bounces. I then look
at the bounced mail and its searching for "tux.housenet.ste.housenet.ste" or
something like that - I did try the sendmail script on the ilug site and
managed to completely bugger up sendmail - and no I'm not going to give up
and be a bin man!!
I tried to get senmail to forward all mail to the server.housenet.ste but
it's the same disaster

So maybe if any one has any pointers - before I go completely grey

Ps - I have the O'Reilly sendmail book but its huge and more detailed than I
can deal with right now - my plan is to get something working and then go
through the book fine tuning it and then the book might make more sense.

Ok enough of the whingeing babble

Stee
