I'm even more paranoid than that and would never do that kind of
manipulation while using any of the disks, which you are of course doing in
single user mode. To my mind, manipulation of that level should be done
while you're booted from some other media (the ILUG BBC springs to mind, and
is exactly what you need to fix the mess you're now in).
