[ILUG] Rebuilding kernel

I have a RH7.1 box here with kernel 2.4.2-2 and I want to recompile it with kernel 2.4.9. Unfortunately the sources were not installed with the first install - so I can't see how the original kernel was compiled. How can I ensure that I am compiling everything I need into the new kernel - or is it a case of trial and error?
