Try re-running LILO with the -l switch. This is to use linear mode. I've had
this fix this exact problem before, although I'll be honest and say I'm not
too clued in as to the dirty details of what's going on.

ie:

root at domain yourbox$ /sbin/lilo -l

I'm guessing to do this your going to have to boot from the CD kernel first though
which IIRC goes:

lash in CD and when you get to the CD's lilo prompt do:

LILO: linux rootdev=/bin/sh ramdisk=0 initrd=

then do the lilo thing and reboot with prayers.

I believe the problem is an odd/old hard-disk. I don't know if grub works
better or worse in this situation.
